(1090 The Fan) —  Despite 34 points from its recently returned star guard DaVonte Lacy, the Washington State Cougars fell 68-63 to Colorado, Wednesday night.

Askia Booker scored 26 points and delivered five assists to lead Colorado (17-6, 6-4). Booker finished 9-for-12 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line, including some key makes in the final seconds.

For the Cougars, the loss comes immediately after one of the team’s better games in which it scored 72 points and outplayed the Washington Huskies.

One game later and Washington State (9-13, 2-8) was right back to its low-scoring ways. Colorado took a 23-20 lead into the break behind the play of Xavier Johnson who had 11 of the team’s 23 points.

Washington State did make a run in the second half. The team exploded for 43 points behind a 20-6 run that enabled the Cougars to close a 54-35 deficit at the 6:46 mark to a 60-55 game with 56 seconds left.

Lacy was particularly good during the Cougars’ dramatic run. The guard who returned for last weekend’s win over Washington, scored nine points and provided much of the energy the team needed.

Colorado was too strong in the end. Johnson finished with 20 points and Wesley Gordon had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds which held off the Cougars late.
