(1090 The Fan) — Outscored 43-21 in the second half, Washington State watched as Oregon overcame a 7-point halftime deficit to defeat the Cougars 67-53, Sunday night at the Matthew Knight Arena.
The loss was the sixth in a row for the Cougars who are struggling to the finish line.
Oregon (18-8, 6-8), meanwhile, had three double-digit scorers led by Mike Moser who dropped 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Joseph Young finished with 18 points and five assists and Jason Calliste had 12 points.
Despite the double-digit loss, the Cougars had a good beginning. The team held 8-3, 17-10 and eventually 31-24 leads, the latter being the score at halftime. But, as has been the case for the Cougars all season, their lead was not foolproof.
Moser connected on a 3-pointer with 18:09 to play, capping an 11-3 run for the Ducks that catapulted the team to a 35-34 lead not even two minutes out of the break.
Washington State was able to tie the score at 36-36 a couple of possessions later on a Lacy basket, but Oregon soon pulled away thanks to an 11-for-20 performance from beyond the 3-point line.
Washington State (9-18, 2-13) continues to have its struggles from the field and protecting the basketball. Oregon out shot the Cougars 48 to 33 percent for the game, while the Cougars also committed 17 turnovers.
There has been a bright spot or two in lieu of the struggles for the team. The Cougars continue to get good production from DaVonte Lacy and D.J. Shelton through it all. Lacy scored a team-high 19 points and Shelton chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds, Sunday.
And while Washington State is unlikely to play postseason basketball in 2014, the team can sweep the season series against Washington, Friday, with a win in Seattle.
