(1090 The Fan) — A game-high 18 points from guard DaVonte Lacy were not enough to carry Washington State to a win, Thursday night, instead the team fell 68-57 to Oregon State.
Angus Brandt led Oregon State (14-11, 6-7) with 16 points. Devon Collier provided 14 points off the bench and Roberto Nelson had 12 points and seven assists for the Beavers which sit ninth in the Pac-12 standings.
Both squads entered in the bottom third of the Pac-12 conference standings with little chance of playing tournament basketball. Winning at this stage of the season is important to each school as it looks ahead to the future.
Washington State looked good early, taking an early 8-2 lead through about four minutes of play only to watch Oregon State respond. The Beavers did just that with a subsequent 24-8 run over the next 10 minutes, before eventually taking a 30-26 lead into the break.
The Beavers had the opening possession in the second half, scored on a Langston Morris-Walker 3-pointer and never looked back from there. The Cougars never got closer than within five points.
The team from Pullman had a bad night from the free-throw line where they finished just 16-for-28 and from the 3-point arc where the team shot 31 percent. Those numbers, coupled with 15 turnovers against the Beavers, resulted in Washington State (9-17, 2-12) dropping its 12th of 14 games.
D.J. Shelton, who scored 1o points Thursday, was the only other double-figure scorer for the Cougars who now continue their road trip with games at Oregon and Washington next week before closing the season out at home.
