Washington Splits Season Series With Win Over Cougars

(1090 The Fan) — Washington never trailed in a relatively comfortable win over its rival Washington State 72-49, Friday night at the Alaska Airlines Arena.

Nigel Williams-Goss scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and Andrew Andrews added 16 points to carry the Huskies to just their third win in the past eight games. The win also gave Washington a split in the season series with the Cougars.

DaVonte Lacy continued to be the lone bright spot for Washington State, leading the team with 25 points on 6-for-14 shooting, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range.

In a game Washington (16-13, 8-8) desperately needed, it got the quick start it wanted with successive three’s by Andrews and Wilcox to open the game.

Despite falling behind 10-3 with 15:35 to play, the Cougars kept the first half competitive, drawing close on a handful of different occasions but were never able to secure the lead. The Huskies closed on a 13-6 run to claim a 36-24 advantage at the break.

A Lacy 3-pointer at 12:59 cut the Washington lead to nine points, 53-44, but that was as close as the Cougars would come the rest of the way. The team shot just 31 percent from the field, which left them unable to make a run.

The Huskies finished at 51 percent from the field for the game and carried a plus-12 edge in the rebounding margin. Washington takes on UCLA on Thursday, before closing the regular season out with USC on Saturday, March 8th.
