(1090 The Fan) — Despite a game-high 21 points from guard Que Johnson, Washington State was dominated by Stanford 80-48, Wednesday night at Maples Pavilion.
Anthony Brown and Josh Huestis scored 15 points apiece to lead the Cardinal, while guard Marcus Allen added 11 points off the bench. Stanford (11-5, 2-2) outscored the Cougars 40-19 in the second half as it pulled away for the Pac-12 conference victory.
It wasn’t all bad for the Cougars. The team ran out to a 24-20 lead 7:11 into the game, behind the play of Johnson and guard Royce Woolridge. The duo combined for all but three of the Cougars’ 29 first half points.
Stanford, though, closed the first half on a 20-5 run over the final seven minutes to catapult into a 40-29 halftime lead. The run coincided almost uniformly with Johnson’s removal from the game with his second foul.
The second half opened in similar fashion. Stanford came out on an 18-4 run while pounding the ball inside. The Cardinal shot 57 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Cougars 37-23 for the game.
Washington State (8-9, 1-4), meanwhile, got just two points from its front court all night. Reserve forward Junior Longrus was responsible, scoring on a jumper in the second half.
Next up for Washington State is a trip to Cal, Saturday.
