PULLMAN, Wash. – Jamar Ergas (6-4, 190, Guard, Toronto/Elite 1 Academy-Ariz.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for Washington State University beginning with the 2016-17 season, head coach Ernie Kent announced Monday.

Ergas spent his sophomore and junior years at 22 Feet Academy at Greenville, S.C., before playing his senior year, the 2014-15 school year, at Elite 1 Academy at Phoenix, Ariz. As a senior, Ergas averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game.

“Over the past few years, Canada has consistently turned out outstanding basketball talent, and we feel Jamar is in line to be a great player,” Kent said. “Not only did we recruit him because of his outstanding basketball abilities, but also because of his tremendous character and academic accomplishments. Jamar will really fit what we’re trying to do in terms of building our program and we look forward to having him in a Cougar uniform.”

Ergas becomes the first Canadian to sign an NLI to join the Washington State men’s basketball program since Shami Gill signed in the spring of 2001. A 6-8 forward from Mission, British Columbia, Gill played for the Cougars for four seasons (2001-02 through 2004-05).

Ergas graduated high school in 2014-15 and will enter Washington State as a true freshman. He joins Malachi Flynn (6-1, 165, Guard, Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep), Milan Acquaah (6-2, 195, Guard, Pasadena, Calif./Cathedral HS) and Jeff Pollard (6-8, 235, Forward, Bountiful Utah/Bountiful HS/Impact Academy), who each previously signed NLIs with the Cougars.
