Shelton’s Career Night Not Enough For Cougars

(1090 The Fan) — A career night from forward D.J. Shelton was not enough to prevent Washington State from dropping its third consecutive Pac-12 conference game, this one a 66-55 loss to Oregon State.

Shelton scored 24 points while going 4-for-4 from behind the arc and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Washington State (8-11, 1-6).

Oregon State (11-7, 3-3) was led by senior guard Roberto Nelson who finished with 26 points, helped by going 11-for-15 from the free-throw line.

The Cougars got as close as six in the second half when Shelton and Ike Iroegbu combined to hit three 3-pointers to cut the Beavers’ lead to 56-50 with less than three minutes remaining. But Oregon State’s Angus Brandt who finished with 14 points, made a lay-up to extend the lead back out to nine and the Cougars had no answer.

Que Johnson finished with 15 points and three assists for the Cougars who shot 50 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 13 times.

Washington State hosts Oregon at the Beasley Center on Sunday.
